Year 9 Design Earthquake Proof Buildings 30.11.12

Year 9 geographers turned into engineers for a lesson by trying to design earthquake proof buildings. Using drinking straws and marshmallows for their models the challenge was to assemble a building structure to withstand an earthquake simulation. Using a moving foundation base on marbles to recreate earthquake like movements each building was put to the test. The most successful designs used triangular lattice shapes to withstand the shaking, a practical way to understand the problems of building in earthquake zones around the world.
