Harriet Cooper’s Swimming 21.03.12

Harriet  competed at the British Championships/Olympic Trials taking place between Saturday 3rd March – Saturday 10th March at the Olympic Pool in London.  This was an extremely successful event for Harriet:

Harriet swam in three events; 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 50m freestyle. She had incredible swims and qualified for the semi finals in 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle, swimming alongside world class swimmers.  In the 50m freestyle she also made reserve semi finalist.

Harriet achieved the qualifying times for the European Championships  in 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle and at the end of the Championships she received confirmation that she has been selected to represent team GB at the European Championships taking place in Antwerp this July.    This is a remarkable achievement as Harriet is competing a year out of age as  the age band for the European Championships is 1996/1997 – and as Harriet is born in 1997 it makes her the youngest on the team.  It also means that she will have an opportunity to qualify again next year!

Harriet returns from Antwerp on Monday 9th July and on Wednesday 11th July she flies out to South Korea, as a member of the swimming team representing Leicester at the International Children’s Games.

Harriet has also been selected to represent Loughborough High School at the UK School Games, taking place at the Olympic Pool on Wednesday 9th May.

As details of the Olympic torch relay have been released this morning are now able to confirm that in recognition of Harriet’s commitment and achievement in swimming she has been successfully nominated to carry the Olympic Torch in the relay and will be carrying it in Barnet, London on Wednesday 25th July.

She has such an exciting summer to look forward to!
