Harriet Cooper’s swimming success 09.09.11

Harriet Cooper competed in two international and one national event during the summer Holidays. She has had an amazing time and loved every minute of every experience. From 23rd – 30th July she went as a member of Team GB to Trabzon, Turkey where she competed in European Youth Olympics. She won a gold medal in her main event 100m backstroke in a time of 1:02:73secs. She also swam in the 50 free.  She was seeded 11th and had an amazing swim, qualifying for the final and coming in 5th place. She swam in both the IM and Free relay teams and the teams finished in 4th place on both occasions. Her performance in Trabzon has earned her a place on the England Talent Development Junior Level 3 Squad for 2011 – 2012.  This training programme involves three residential camps – two in the UK and one based offshore in Spain. After the Youth Olympics Harriet competed in the International Children’s Games in Lanarkshire from Wednesday 3rd – Monday 8th August. This was an event involving swimmers from all over the world.  She won 3 silver medals in 100 and 50 back and 100 free. In the final weekend of the summer holiday, from Thursday 1st – Sunday 4th September Harriet represented Loughborough High School in the UK School Games.  She had one individual event – 50 Free and was a member of the Freestyle relay team.  She came back with 2 gold medals – winning her individual event and the relay team also won, breaking the existing school record.

Harriet has learnt so much from her experiences this summer.  So much so that she has been helping her satellite club, the Leicester Penguins prepare the junior team for the Regional Final taking place this weekend.
