History is studied by all pupils up to the end of year 9 and is a popular option both at GCSE and in the sixth form. We broadly follow the national curriculum, studying British history from 1066 -1945. Pupils currently study the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus, focussing on the modern world from 1919 to 1989. We will be looking at, among other topics, the causes of World War Two, the Cold War, events in the Gulf 1970-2000 and the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. At AS and A level we study the Angevin empire of Henry II, Richard and John and Russia 1855-1964; there is also a personal study component where students are encouraged to investigate a topic in a more independent manner. The department makes full use of a range of teaching and learning styles and organises trips for all years, including visits to the World War I battlefields, Versailles and to plays and films of historical interest.
